Instagram filters and video, 9:16 color, 1 min and 54 sec
Collaborative Glitch is a compilation video that investigates how participants engage with two reality-morphing filters. One filter is reminiscent of a vintage VHS glitch and the other contrasts it with the future possibilities of AI/Cyborg technology. As our enmeshment with technology intensifies, filters reveal the blurred line between embodiment, self-perception, the gaze of the Other, and technological prosthesis. These designed filters encourage users and spectators to ask: how human are we? What is our fascination with technology that resembles and behaves like the human? How do we perceive ourselves in the digital world? As you observe these users playing with their filtered presence, I encourage you to question how you behave with filters as well. Ashley Reed is a junior transfer student majoring in Media Studies at UC Berkeley.
